Obituary The West Australian 24 August 1939 p.19
AN ESPERANCE PIONEER. Death of Mrs. Julia Sinclair. ESPERANCE, Aug. 18.-On August 13, Mrs. Julia Sinclair died at her residence in Dempster-street, aged 81 years. Her hus band, Mr. L. Sinclair sen, who prede ceased her in 1923, in 1892 located gold in the cap of the Norseman reef at the same time as his brother and Mr. Allsop did farther north. He named the place Norseman after the horse he was using on the journey. Mrs. Julia Sinclair's passing removes one connected with the very earliest as sociations with Esperance. To many resi dents, and others departed, now with crown-up families, she was attending nurse to their mothers before Esperance was blessed with doctors, post office or hosDital. It was in 1872 that the first portion of the Fanny's Cove sheep sta tion dwelling was built by the late Mr. W. Moir. and it was just before then that the Dempster brothers--Andrew, Jim and Edward---moved portion of their flocks from the Toodyay and Grass Valley areas to the coast here, later also stocking Fraser's Range; the late Mr. Benjamin Hannett assisting them to do so. At the time the whole of the southern coast of this State was served solely by the schooner Agnes, under the Douglas bro thers, Captain Fred and Jim, right from Albany to Eucla. The schooner was later wrecked at Bremer Bay and a larger ves sel was pdrchased and employed in he trade. The Eastern Goldfields had not yet been located. In was in 1879 that the late Mrs. Sinclair (then Miss Phail) came to the by now established home stead of the Deinpster brothers, and soon after, portion of what is now the resi dency, was turned into a post office. Mrs. Sinclair had resided there since until her death. While there are still several Esper ance residents who can remember the fSiding of Norseman, Mr. Andrew Dunn, of:- Boyatup, is now the sole Esperance resident who was here before the finding of gold at Kalgoorlie. Mrs. Sinclair left an adult family of sons and daughters.

[Her maiden name is given here as Phail, but this may be a typographical error]
